FOCUS on Health Care

An overview of the FOCUS on Healthcare website, one of the only sites available in Alberta to publicly report system-level data across the provincial healthcare system. The site hosted by Health Quality Council of Alberta reports hundreds of thousands of data points including information on wait times, delivery of care and patient experience.

Learning objectives:

1. Learn about how different sectors of the healthcare system are identified and displayed on the FOCUS website.

2. Learn what data mining opportunities are possible for healthcare leaders and QI professionals; and how content was developed to help decision makers.

3. Learn about how data is organized and updated on FOCUS and the tools that are used (project management related).

4. Learn about the process to identify and select measures -- and how the HQCA engages with key decisionmakers inside healthcare as well as patients and families.

 

Speakers:

Maz Rahman

As an established healthcare professional, Maz Rahman has been working in Alberta's healthcare system for the past 17 years. He has had a career spanning some of the largest healthcare organizations in Alberta including Alberta Health Services, the Alberta Medical Association and most recently with the Health Quality Council of Alberta.

Maz has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta, an Environmental Public Health degree from Concordia University, and a master's degree in health administration from the University of Regina along with a certificate in public health management from University of Manchester. He is passionate about data driven strategy and using data as a means of transparency and accountability in the healthcare system for system transformation. Maz also volunteers with several non-profit boards and was the chair of the Benevolence Fund at Islamic Family Social Services.

Darren Mazzei

Darren is a Lead on the Health System Analytics team. He is a physiotherapist by profession and a recent PhD graduate in Health Economics at the University of Calgary. His doctoral thesis is evaluating the need, value, and affordability of first-line therapies for hip and knee osteoarthritis in Alberta. Darren likes to spend free time skiing, biking, and doing activities outdoors
